Yes, it definitely IS vintage Miriam Haskell (pre-World War II) - Frank Hess (there are multiple listings from other dealers on the Internet to prove this). Yes, it IS unsigned. And yes, the red thread at the back of the clip is definitely how the bead drops were attached to the clip. Don't believe me? The brooch is depicted in Cathy Gordon/Sheila Pamfiloff's book, Miriam Haskell jewelry, page 38, top right illustration. With gilt metal findings that have patinated to a wonderful color, this stunning fur clip features cranberry-colored round glass beads in different sizes (5.5mm to 14mm) as well as white rhinestone that measure 5mm. The clip measures 3-1/2" long and has a width of 1-3/4" at the center of the cluster. Terrific condition that is ready to be worn once more.
"The use of clips, not just as a lapel ornament but also as the central feature of a necklace, was very common during the years between the two world wars." From Cera, The Jewels of Miriam Haskell, p. 25. Both Bertl and Millie say there were far more dress clips made than fur clips.
