Levi Strauss & Co., the California Gold Rush era outfitter whose iconic blue jeans have been an American clothing staple for generations, closed its last two U.S. plants in San Antonio, Texas by the end of 2003. By that time, more than 20 other U.S. plants had already been shut down. Soon after, in March 2004, the last three Canadian facilities were closed as well. This marked the end of American-made Levi's denim, a history that began in the 1850s.
The most iconic Levi's denim factory, founded on Valencia Street in San Francisco, was closed in 2002. The building itself was sold in 2005.
