HAPPY BUDDHA WITH 5 CHILDREN PORCELAIN FAMILLE ROSE ENGRAVED MARK. For sale is a wonderful vintage Chinese porcelain happy or laughing Buddha, otherwise known as Hotei or Putai or Budai, with kids or children climbing on him. This is a popular image in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan; although this Buddha could have come from any of those places, we think it's Chinese. We think it was probably produced in one of the centralized factories in the People's Republic of China (PROC) era. The base is marked with impressed characters in kaisho script (which we have not been able to match to any known marks) and the number 43. In Asian culture the family theme is very strong. It is not unusual to have two or three generations living in the same house. This figurine depicts a grandfather figure telling stories to attentive young boys and girls [The Story Teller]. It is also been known as [The Laughing Buddha]. The older generation in Asian culture is always very well respected and considered because of their experience, fountains of knowledge and wisdom. This figurine represents passing on that knowledge and wisdom to the next generation in stories. A lovely conversation piece for your home.
