VTG 1940s Heart Brooch

It's such a sweet "heart" of a time gone by! Is it faded yet written on front 1940? Unknown gold tone metal. Functional wheel closure. No manufacturer markings. I believe the heart was once a whole hollow piece that someone thought it was a locket and attempted to pry apart?? I'm not a professional jeweler.
