Made by my great grandmother, Lucy Phillips, from Vienna, Louisiana.
My great grandfather died before she knew she was pregnant with my grandmother, so she became a single mother in 1927. She raised my grandmother, Claudia (named after her father, Claude), alone, in a tiny house, in a tiny town, in the pines of Northern Louisiana.
She was extremely talented with textiles, and made hundreds of pieces. She rarely had any trim or lace for finishing the edges, so she made her own with thread and yarn. The fabric she used was mainly leftovers from making clothes for herself and my grandmother. She taught my grandmother how to use everything, make do with whatever she had, and to be independent and self sufficient. My daughter is named Claudia, in honor of them.
This vintage handmade apron is a charming addition to any collection. The red cotton material is adorned with an appliquéd and embroidered design featuring a bonnet girl. Measuring 11 inches in length and 11.5 inches in width, this apron is perfect for boys, girls, and unisex babies and toddlers. It is a unique and delightful piece of history that would make a wonderful gift for any collector or lover of vintage items.
