Gantos was THE fancy store of the Midwest as only Chicago had a Saks or Nordstrom’s. It was the place for sophisticated work and eveningwear. The pantyhose were di rigeur among the ladies who lunched. Women of Color particularly loved the Gold because it was sheer enough that you didn’t need to worry if the color didn’t match your legs, (this was pre-Fenty) giving just the right amount of glimmer.
