Artus Van Briggle was an American artist known for his significant impact on the Art Nouveau movement in the United States. He co-founded Van Briggle Art Pottery in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1901 with his wife, Anne Louise Gregory. Their pottery creations featured distinctive matte glazes and Art Nouveau designs, drawing acclaim from both American and European art communities. Van Briggle’s work received high honors at prestigious events such as the Paris Salon, the Saint Louis Exposition, and the American Arts and Crafts Exhibition in Boston1. Before establishing the pottery studio, Artus had already made a name for himself as a painter and decorator at Rookwood Pottery in Ohio. His journey from Europe to Colorado Springs led to the creation of a lasting legacy in American art pottery.
Artus Van Briggle was born in 18691. He was a notable artist and the founder of Van Briggle Pottery, which played a significant role in the American Art Nouveau movement. His distinctive matte glazes and Art Nouveau designs continue to influence pottery even today.
Artus Van Briggle died of tuberculosis on July 4, 1904, at age 35. Eventually, many of the pieces from the 1904 exhibit were donated to this museum.
