Veryl Goodnight - A Light in the West (Study)
Medium: Bronze
Edition: 36/150
Size: 8'' x 5''
Artist Statement: This is the most recent addition to my Women of the West sculpture series. There are now seventeen bronzes in the collection, which began in 1984 with 'Cares for Her Brothers'. My model, Jessica, also modeled in 'No Turning Back' and 'The Gathering'. In this sculpture, she is carrying a candle and clutching a shawl to protect herself from the evening chill.
Art is completed by the viewer. "A Light in the West' seems to fit this description, for everyone who sees it finds their own interpretation. Veryl Goodnight comments, "I began the Trail Trilogy with 'No Turning Back', a sculpture of a young woman leaning on a wagon wheel and apprehensively looking back down the trail. The second sculpture, 'Before the Storm', depicts her determinedly facing the challenges as she walks into a storm with an armload of wood. 'A Light in the West' is the final sculpture of the Trilogy, depicting the peace and calm that comes with success."
This sculpture is discussed on page 115 of the artist's book, No Turning Back: The Art of Veryl Goodnight.
