Vintage 1950's Harkerware Corinthian Pattern Gravy Boat & Platter No Chips/Cracks
This set is in excellent condition - only one tiny discoloration on the bottom of the platter (see photo).
The distinctive raised detail along the lip of the boat and around the platter is made by a process called pate-sur-pate or paste-on-paste. The process begins by creating a relief design on a piece before it is fired or glazed: an artisan then uses a brush to apply light porcelain slip (liquid clay) to the raised portions of the design. (see photos).
Notice also the delicate curves on the base of the gravy boat.
According to the Museum of Ceramics, "Harkerware Pottery began production in1840 in a small log cabin pottery and closed in 1972 after 132 years of continuous production and service in the East Liverpool, Ohio, community." The Corinthian patten was produced during the 1950's.
Excellent condition: no cracks or chips. One tiny discoloration on underside of platter and one scratch on the platter surface.
Measurements: Bowl - 7 1/2" lip to outside of handle; Platter: 9" long.
