Vintage 1950's Tinsel Foil Art, Reverse Painting Floral Basket Gold-Tone Frame

Vntage Foil-Tinsel art featuring a bouquet of flowers in a basket painted on glass in a gold metal ornate frame. This is a reverse painting on glass that was very popular during the turn of the century, also known as glass tinsel painting. Tinsel paintings are reverse paintings on glass with smooth or crumpled metallic foil applied behind translucent and transparent areas; when viewed in candlelight or gaslight, the effect was one of shimmering highlights. These treasures are the most under-recognized decorative art that was widely practiced in America -- primarily by women -- from 1850 to 1890 A resurgence of this lost art came back in the 50’s and 60’s.
