Vintage 1955 Hokusai Japan Artist Book Mount Fuji Slipcover Artia Prague Edition

Vintage 1955 softcover art book entitled “Hokusai: The Man Mad-On-Drawing”. Introduction by Joe Hloucha. Includes 48 colored woodcuts reproduced from photographs by W. Forman. Includes original tri-fold panel slipcover with illustration of Mt. Fuji on the interior. There is a small piece of paper glued to the page opposite the Table of Contents apparently glued in to cover an errata in printing. Condition is used. The slipcover has significant water staining. There is NO offensive odor to the slipcover or book. The book inside is in good condition. No writing in book. The interior pages have yellowed and have foxing staining due to age. Measures approximately 8 x 10-3/8 inches. “Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), known simply as Hokusai, was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period, active as a painter and printmaker. He is best known for the woodblock print series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the iconic print ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’. Hokusai was instrumental in developing ukiyo-e from a style of portraiture largely focused on courtesans and actors into a much broader style of art that focused on landscapes, plants, and animals. His works are thought to have had a significant influence on Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet during the wave of Japonisme, that spread across Europe in the late 19th century.”
