This cookbook is an interesting piece of history. Community cookbooks have been around since the Civil War when the first charity cookbook was sold to raise money for wounded soldiers. Although most of the early cookbooks were published by religious groups, church ladies weren’t the only ones fundraising with cookbooks. In 1886, a progressive women’s group in Massachusetts published The Woman Suffrage Cookbook as a way to both raise money for the women’s suffrage campaign and also communicate their political message in a passive, non-confrontational manner. Selling a book of recipes at a market or fair was a safe and non-offensive way to reach a larger audience and make contact with people who normally wouldn’t have associated with their cause.
