Vintage 1970’s Cybis “Funny Face” child clown in porcelain. Boleslaw Cybis was a Lithuanian artist that worked with painting and eventually sculpture. He founded several studios in the USA, the last of which was Cybis Studio which closed in 2019. His work was technically rigorous and his sculptures and studio output is considered world-class and is highly collectible and presented in museums.
This clown has a sweet and innocent face with tasteful dabs of bright orange-red paint that points to and highlights his beautiful blue eyes. His face is framed by a stiff ruffled collar with a bow to the side. The collar has very realistic and technical folds that defy the porcelain medium. He has blonde, wavy hair topped by a formed high hat. The hat has two Pom poms with a raised, bumpy surface that harkens to yarn effect. The color of the Pom poms is repeated in the eyes. Beautifully balanced and striking piece. The sculpture is mounted on a wood block lined with felt on bottom. Stamped with makers mark and “Cybis” on back.
