Handcrafted Sculpy Turtles
Set of 8
Vintage Freddy B. Turtle Handcrafted Sculpy Turtles (Pair). Sculptured by artist Barry Carpenter in the 1970’s, these whimsical “Flower Power” pair of turtles are in excellent condition due to the fact my mother put them in my person antique china cabinet to keep them for me. Sculpy was a new low-fired clay at the time in the 1970’s and the artist Barry Carpenter designed the turtles and sold them through a company called Aviva Enterprises, and manufactured by Universal Toys in Hong Kong. This was the 1970’s, right after the “Flower Power” years of the 1960’s. Mr. Carpenter found this new clay was more flexible and he could mold the little turtles in various positions. The turtles were all olive green, with painted eyes of yellow and black. Each turtle he made was involved in a unique activity. The turtles I own have flowers painted on them. One turtle is featured blowing a pink bubble of chewing gum and holding an armful of colorful gum balls. The other turtle features him looking at a ladybug on his nose. The turtle with the ladybug is 2” tall, 2 5/8” long, and 1 1/4” wide. The turtle with the gum balls is 2 1/4” tall, 1 3/4” wide, and 2” across
Some have the gold stickers. Mark med 1972
