Historically, the term “big apple” has always meant the best and biggest of places. In the 1970’s, as the result of a successful marketing campaign intended to attract tourists, “The Big Apple” was officially adopted as New York City’s nickname. The term was born in the 1920s in reference to the prizes (or “big apples”) awarded at the many racing courses in and around New York City.
