Vintage 1970 Picasso Linen Covered Coffee Table Book "Picasso - Oeuvres Recues en Paiement des Droits de Succession" 1979, first edition, in French. 325 pages. Hard to find red lettering on spine The title roughly translates into "Picasso - Works Received in Payment of Inheritance Taxes," which prompted me to do a deep dive on the origin of this book. "On the eve of Pablo Picasso’s 85th birthday in 1966, a large retrospective, Hommage à Picasso, was put on at the Grand Palais in Paris showcasing over 800 pieces of his work. The motivation behind this exhibition was in part a celebration of his birthday and long artistic career, but it was also motivated by the French Cultural Affairs Minister André Malraux who was pushing a cultural renaissance in France. With this momentum and in anticipation of Picasso's inheritance, the French government changed the law in 1968 to allow heirs to donate artworks in lieu of paying inheritance taxes." As a result, after Picasso's passing in 1973, his heirs donated over 3,800 artworks to the French government, and those are now in the Picasso Museum in Paris. And this book was published as a quasi catalogue of all the donated work of Picasso.
