Vintage 40's or 50's Reptile Scale Satchel Purse

What a find! We are not reptile experts so we don't know what kind of reptile scales these are but we are thinking maybe alligator? The inside is lined in leather. There are leather straps with a loop that pulls down to close or pulls up to open. Leather on straps in shedding. There is some wear around edges of purse and on scales. The inside bottom liner has some dark (pen?) marks. Other than that it is in good condition considering its age. We estimate this to be from the 40's or 50's.
