Vtg 1960s beaded apron from Ndebele, South Africa. This apron is called a Jocolo, distinguished by the 5 hanging lower panels which are said to represent a woman's ability to produce children. Normally a bride would be given a white sheepskin or goatskin apron from her in-laws + then decorated it w/beads.This would have been worn by a bride on her wedding day + for special celebrations after until she had her first child. These have also been referred to as itshogolo.

The colorful bead design is a of a modern dwelling w/windows, doors, + a pitched roof. This represents the importance of home + family to the Ndebele. There is also a small tuft of goat hair attached under the top flap. The row of copper ringlets represents the history + wealth of the Ndebele (being once copper miners). Most often woman would cut off the copper rings before handing down their Jocolo + either save them for their daughters or reuse them on a another ceremonial piece.
