Adams Ware's origins trace back to 1657 when the Adams family began their pottery business in Burslem, Staffordshire. This area was one of the cradles of the English pottery industry, particularly known for its ceramics. By the 18th century, the Adams family had established several potteries. William Adams (1746-1805) founded Greengates Pottery, which became notable for producing jasperware, competing with Wedgwood. They were known for their fine jasperware, creamware, and later, ironstone. The family business expanded under different branches of the Adams family, with various potteries producing for different markets. They were acquired by the Wedgwood Group in 1966, which broadened their reach but also marked the end of their independent operation under the Adams name.
