Designer history:
The Barclay mark was first used on jewelry made by this company in 1948. Both script marks reading only Barclay and Barclay Art in Jewelry (inside an artist’s palette) can be found. The tradename Peltanium was registered to Barclay in 1953, but jewelry historians have not run across pieces with this branding. The name may have been registered and never used, or only used in marketing materials.
It is also important to note that some jewelry designed by American illustrator McClelland Barclay for Rice-Weiner was only marked, Barclay. The lettering used on these marks is not in script, however, and has styling that is more Art Deco in nature. McClelland Barclay jewelry is older and usually sells at a higher price point than Barclay jewelry. Other than having the connection to Rice-Weiner from a manufacturing standpoint, this jewelry is not akin to later Barclay designs.
Barclay Jewelry Co. appears to have ceased operation around 1957. Jewelry historians have concluded that the pieces they manufactured during the last few years in business were unmarked, but the familiar styling of the designs can sometimes identify them.
