It has to do with the position on the glass making machine. The company was founded by 5 Ball Brothers. The Ball Co was founded in 1882 with a $200 loan. Ball specialized in glass manufacturing. They started producing in Buffalo, New York but moved to Indiana in 1887 after a fire destroyed the New York plant. They were a staple of the business community in Indiana for over a hundred years. The lightning jars were called that due to being able to open and close quickly. They were initially created for home canning and food preservation, but have since become prized by vintage enthusiasts and collectors.
