A LITTLE HISTORY OF THE ARTIST:
MARCELLO FANTONI (1915-2011) began his studies in ceramic art at the age of 12 at the Art Institute of Florence with the ceramist Carlo Guerrini, then artistic director of the famous CANTAGALLI factory. He continued his years of training in ceramics and other arts, including sculpture with Libero Andreotti and Bruno Innocenti and figurative art with Gianni Vagnetti, eventually graduating as Maestro in 1934. In 1936 he opened the FANTONI CERAMIC STUDIO in Florence.
Fantoni drew on various influences – Primitivism, Novecento style, Cubism and Abstract Expressionism. In addition to clay, he often worked with metals with great success. Each Fantoni piece finally became unique thanks to its hand painting. His painting style remains one of the most recognizable qualities of his creations. In 1970 Fantoni founded the International School of Ceramic Art.
