Here we have 2 lovely "barro negro" or black clay pottery angel bells from Oaxaca, Mexico. The angel's face has such a subtly real look to it, it's quite amazing. Everything else about the angels is more rough in shape. It has a couple spots on the back of one that is either from being bumped or just the way it was made . Barro negro is form of folk art from Oaxaca, at one time was glazed but in the 1950s, was produced mostly with a burnished sheen. That's thanks to a potter named Doña Rosa, who devised a way to put a black metallic like sheen onto the pottery by polishing it before firing.
These angels have that burnished pottery sheen, and do note that in some of the photos the sheen reflects warm light.
The angel measures about 4" tall and the round base is about 3.5" wide. They have a piece of string around her waist which goes through a small hole in the clay to hold the bell. Weighs approximately 4 ounces each.
Original string and ringers.
Each has a different ring tone.
