Man and His World, International Fine Arts Exhibition, Montreal, Canada. April 28 - October 27 1967. Presented by the National Gallery of Canada.
"The artists of most civilizations have been concerned with the nature of man although not all have been as optimistic as the Greeks about his perfectibility. He often appears as a hero-- an athlete, a hunter, an explorer or a king. In the Far East, he is usually the philosopher, forgetting his physical self in his absorption in the nature of being. The Reformation introduced self-doubts into the interpretation of man in the art of the West; these have grown into the strong sense of anxiety which appears in the images of 20th century man."
