Putnam’s Sons, New York. “Only the author of The Sword in the Stone” could have produced this remarkable book - a translation of a twelfth-century Latin prose bestiary. The medieval bestiary was intended as a serious work of natural history.” Of “The Book of Beasts” T. H. White writes: “I had to teach myself to read 12th-century shorthand abbreviations before I could begin translating the 800-year-old handwriting of the only exact copy in existence.” 296 pages. Measures approximately 6-1/4 x 9 inches. Condition is used. There is an ink inscription of previous owners’ names on both of the title pages and the back end page. No other writing in book. The dust jacket has visible creasing and tears with taped repairs. The corners of the inner flaps of dust jacket look to have been clipped. There are remnants of cellophane tape on the interior of the protective plastic cover. There is some pitting, scratching and small holes in the plastic cover. Item ships from a smoke-free location.
