Vintage Humpty Dumpty Bank
I am not an expert, but believe this is a vintage reproduction c.1980's of an antique from the 19th century. I purchased it at an estate sale 20 years ago and have kept it in good condition.
The " Humpty Dumpty Money Box" was manufactured by Shepard Hardware C0. Buffalo, N.Y It was based on Patent No. 255,000 issued to C.G Shepard and P. Adams, Jr on march 14, 1882. This Patent No. 15,085 on June 17, 1884. Shepard Hardware Company also covered the bank with Englishand Canadian patents in 1885. The character depicted by the bank was the well known pantomime clown, G.L Fox. The bank closely resembles an engraving of fox who had starred in a show named "Humpy Dumty" which opend in New York City on march 10, 1868. it waas advertised in the 1886 Selchow & Righter Catalog for $8.00 per dozen.
A coin was to be placed in the right hand and press the lever located behind the left shoulder to deposit a coin in the mouth.
Good used condition with some wear. The stopper on the underside is missing. There are a few light pencil marks on the white paint on the face.Hand painted and unique. Colors are still quite bright. All cast iron.
Bursting with vibrant colors that defy its age, this collectible item is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of yesteryears. Perfect for enthusiasts of mechanical banks, registers, vending machines, toy collectors, clown memorabilia collectors, and Americana collectors.
