Here is a vintage celluloid flower brooch with c-clasp. The c-clasp would date it as early 1900’s or late 1800’s, about 1850 to 1910. But because this brooch is made of celluloid it is not yet antique, because celluloid was not used for making jewelry until the 1930s! How do I know it is celluloid, a small corner of one of the petals is broken off. Bakelite and Lucite will not chip, crack, crumble or break! They are thermoset! So it seems some companies continue to use the c-clasp on brooches well into the 30's.
The petals have a lovely pearlescent sheen. It is hard to see in the pics but the petals have red lines drawn on them at the bottom of the flower petal to make them look more like petals. I notice very tiny red spots the same color as the lines that appear to be splattered over the petals. Not sure if this is part of the flower from manufacturing or not. I haven’t tried to see if they will clean off. Otherwise it is in very good condition considering it is at nearly 100 years old! I have never worn it.
It is 1 ¼” x 2 5/8”.
It is unmarked.
See pics.
I cannot find this brooch anywhere. But go see what other celluloid brooches from this time period are selling for!
