Exceedingly rare vintage Maison Gripoix for Chanel necklace from the late 1920s-1930s. Three rich burgundy red poured glass elements, studded with gilt stars, hang from a gilt chain finished with a spring ring closure. I have had the piece professionally authenticated as well as examined by an independent appraiser, and will pass the authenticity certificate information along to the buyer, and of course this would go through Poshmark authentication too. Bonhams recently sold a clip from the same collection by Gripoix for Chanel and they attributed theirs to the 1930s - however, the provenance on mine indicated it may be slightly earlier, from the late 1920s. The chain is approximately 22 inches, or 56 centimeters, or so in length. Unsigned, per the era. The ring the spring ring clasps to is etched with Roman numerals ‘XIV’ which I believe may be an homage to Louis XIV, who reigned over the birth of haute couture and the rise of Paris as the center of high jewelry. Some of Chanel’s designs took inspiration from Louis XIV and she kept decorative pieces from his era in her apartment at the Ritz. In the 19th century, historians dated the origins of costume jewelry to his reign, as fashions followed the court but very few could afford the fine jewelry Louis the XIV popularized - Chanel’s and Maison Gripoix’s approach would invert that dynamic by embracing and popularizing costume jewelry explicitly. Gorgeous necklace from the era that made Chanel famous - a true collector’s piece.
