Vintage hand thrown studio pottery oil lamp from Wild Thyme Pottery in western Massachusetts
The style of this lamp is called Dancing Flames, and it is modeled after ancient oil lamps from the Holy Land
To use, insert a length of cord wick into the basin and keep it level with the top of the opening
Once lit the flame dances in the opening, hence the name
These lamps were a hallmark of the Wild Thyme pottery (operated by June Keener Wink) and are relatively hard to find nowadays
This remarkable piece features a rich iron red glaze on a brown base, resulting in deep red and black speckled finish
The lines on this lamp are so soothing, from the turn marks on the bottom to the molded handle made just the right width for your fingers and thumb
Measures approx 2 1/2” tall and 4 3/4” wide
Signed by the studio on the bottom
I found this lamp at an antique store many years ago and never used it as an oil lamp - I kept it on the mantle as a piece of art
It can also be used as a candle holder or vase if you choose
Nice unused condition with no chips, cracks or repairs
