This is a fabulous piece of history and is extremely iconic and an important piece of fashion history. With a New York Creation label, this true vintage 1940's fascinator was made in New York.
In 1941 the New York Dress Institute was formed as a joint venture between the IGLWU and the clothing manufacturers of New York City. The purpose was to promote clothing and dressed made in New York, and to promote New York as the fashion center of the country. This was actually during the period of fashion history where New York was working diligently to be considered a worthy fashion center, apart from Paris.
This fabulous fascinator was sold at a famed Detroit department store, D. J. Healy's. This was a 6 floor store, built exclusive in Detroit. It was known for high end fashion of all types. This piece would have been sold in it's accessories section. It still retains the label, along with the New York Creation label.
As you can see this lovely item is in excellent condition. All of the tulle is firm and it holds it's layered shape beautifully. It looks like a dahlia flower. In between the myriad of folded layers of brown tulle are small, folded light blue, grossgrain ribbon bows. A classic color combination. The base of the hat is made to lay across the top of the head. I have pinned it in the photo, as the original wearer would have. This portion of the hat is perfect too.
