this is a set of 2 vintage blue and white porcelain rice bowls made in Japan and possibly China
The bowls are made of porcelain and decorated in a blue and white style, a technique known as "sometsuke" in Japan.
This style is common in both Japanese and Chinese ceramics and is characterized by blue designs painted under a clear glaze. The blue pigment often comes from cobalt ore.
the bowl pictured on the left is featuring a blue and white design with lucky Kanji characters, Chinese characters used in Japanese writing. They likely represent wishes for good fortune and longevity, such as "寿" (kotobuki) meaning "long life" and "福" (fuku) meaning "good fortune".
the bowl on the right features an intricate design including landscape floral patterns, and figures. this bowl is stamped with JAPAN.
It's difficult to determine the exact origin and age without further markings or context. However, the style and characters suggest it could be either Japanese or Chinese, possibly dating back several decades. Blue and white porcelain has a long history in China, dating back to the Tang and Yuan dynasties. In Japan, Arita porcelain (also known as Imari ware) has been produced since the 16th century and is known for its high quality.
both bowls are just over 4" wide and about 2" tall
they are rice bowls meant to be handheld while eating
EUC, both in excellent pre-owned condition and clean
thanks so much for looking, cheers-Amanda
