In 1938, Chef André, (1901-1952), and his young family boarded the Île de France and sailed to the US to avoid the coming invasion. Initially, André worked at the restaurant of a relative in Babylon NY, then moved on to work for the Emery family in Hamilton, Ohio. Sometime before 1942 they settled in Chicago where he worked at The Barclay until his untimely death.
