A beautiful vintage Navajo Clay & Pinon Pitch Pottery Vase. This unique handmade piece is signed by Navajo artist, Faye B. Tso. This vase was taken to King Galleries in Scottsdale, AZ for review to find out if it may have been repaired at some point in time. After research, it was determined that this piece of art is exactly as the artisan, Faye B. Tso, initially created it and that there have been no repairs.
Standing approximately 7 1/2" tall, the vase displays two lizards on the outside surface. A dip on one side of the clay vase is believed to have occurred during the initial firing process and was sealed by Faye Tso with Pinon Pitch. The few white spots on the vase were checked and determined by King Galleries to be calcified Pinon Pitch. These calcified areas do not decrease the beauty or value of this unique piece. The bottom is signed by Faye B. Tso. Excellent Pre-Owned Condition. No Flaws.
Faye Tso (1933–2004) was one of the first Navajo potters to use unconventional imagery in her pottery. Traditional Navajo pottery has very little decoration, but Tso applied images onto the surface of the clay. She dug her clay at Coal Mine Mesa, where she also gathered pinon from which she extracted the pitch resin used to coat and seal her pottery. Several of Tso's pieces are held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
