Pair of Vintage, Hand-Painted Praying Nun (Sister of Mercy) Candle Snuffers (also known as the French Abbess (Sister of Charity). By Royal Worcester, Made in England. Offers always considered, but no lowballs—these are extremely collectible in A+ condition - free of chips, cracks or paint loss!
Gorgeous glossy porcelain (fine bone china) hand painted in great detail with black, gold and soft colors on the face. Note the bible with gilt pages, keys, rosary beads, bow and beautiful facial characteristics! Each one is unique!
Each measures 3 7/8” H by 1 5/8” W.
The Nun candle snuffer was first introduced by Royal Worcester in the 1850s & 1860s. They were sold as a pair. Victorian extinguishers were used daily, and often displayed on the mantelpiece. Royal Worcester were reissued in 1976 in a softer color palette.
It’s hard to date these examples based on the backstamp. One the one hand, they bear handpainted letters (one has an “A”, the other an “M”), which would indicate 1967 and 1877. However, they are in such perfect condition—no chips, cracks or paint loss—I think they are more likely from the period in the 1970s where these were reproduced, and the letter mark may be specific to the artist who painted them.
