Vintage Reproduction Peruvian Chancay Burial Grave Doll Painted Tapestry & Reed

This vintage doll is a reproduction of the old pre-Columbian Chancay dolls, although the doll itself is contemporary, made in the 70's-80s period, some of the fabric fragments are ancient pre columbian materials - hundreds of years old! They were taken from the old grave sites and made into this charming primitive doll. These ‘dolls’ are believed to represent human beings, rather than supernatural beings (such as gods or spirits) based on the details of their costume. These details also serve to show the gender of the ‘dolls’. For example, female ‘dolls’ have netted head cloths, whilst male ones have slings. Additionally, the gender of these ‘dolls’ can be distinguished based on the patterns on their faces. Females are said to have “several variations of diagonal stepped patterns”, whilst their male counter-parts are reported to have a more standardized “pattern of three triangular sections”. Made from painted tapestry and reed. Measures 11.5” tall. Good vintage condition. Missing some thread in the front as shown in photos, but it truly adds to the character of this vintage piece.
