Frederick the Great in 1745 commissioned The Royal Porcelain Factory to create/produced the Elfenbein porcelain design for his Sanssouci palace in Potsdam, Germany. Rosenthal acquired the license to produce the Elfenbein porcelain in 1894 from the Royal Porcelain Factory, and produced the pieces in a variety of patterns. Rosenthal still produces some Elfenbein pieces. Rosenthal's version is true to the original design and has never been altered.
