, Lacquer brooches painted in Zhostovo style are the most interesting and most popular items. They may be painted on background of different colors but the traditional "classical" is black color background. Artists use paper-mache base with a plain safe "English" pin. The usual subjects of painting are roses, daisies and other flowers. The painting is page is typical Zhostovo manner and the ready goods are finished with some layers of glossy lacquer.
Russian lacquer art developed from the art of icon painting, which came to an end with the collapse of Imperial Russia. The icon painters, who previously had been employed by supplying not only churches but people's homes, needed a way to make a living. Thus, the craft of making papier-mâché decorative boxes and panels developed, the items were lacquered and then hand painted by the artists, often with scenes from folk tales.
