Serge Mendjisky (French, b.1929) was born in Paris to a family of painters. His renowned father, Maurice Mendjisky (Polish, 1889–1951), was very active in the École de Paris, which brought together artists from across Europe, as well as the Soviet Union, who had fled political persecution in their homelands, and were now studying each other’s artistic styles, as well cross-pollinating with the major French artists of the period.
Mendjisky studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and started exhibiting his work in major salons and Parisian galleries from a very early age. He was particularly drawn to the work of the Impressionists and the Pointillists, notably Édouard Manet (French, 1832–1883) and Georges Seurat (French, 1859–1891). The City of Lights provided him with ample subject matter for his compositions, which were luminous, highly chromatic, and lyrical in their rendition of Paris's vibrant waterways and magnificent architecture. He captured the magic of the city, whose animated streets, colorful outdoor markets, elegant buildings, and lush gardens supplied him with endless sources of inspiration.
He had numerous solo shows throughout Europe, Japan, and the United States. His work was acquired by individual collectors, such as the Agha Khan and Nelson Rockefeller.
