Vintage Set of 3 Corning Opalware Bowls - Gold Leaf Pattern - Circa 1936-1945.
Awesome set of 3 HTF Corning Opalware Bowls manufactured before the Pyrex name was associated with opalware.
Production of opalware commenced in 1936 after Corning Glass Works merged with MacBeth-Evans Glass Co. in Charleroi, PA. The plant there would be used to produce a more durable messware for the military, but the product would not be branded Pyrex until the debut of kitchenware made from it nearly a decade later. The backstamp seen on various items prior to that echoes a MacBeth-Evans trademark, but one not previously used on their glassware: that of a glassblower, or "gaffer", nicknamed "Little Joe".
These bowls pre-date Pyrex named opalware based on the bottom stamp of the "gaffer" or 'Little Joe" the glassblower.
The Hilton Hotel used this pattern made by Corning as Pyrex restaurant ware.
The bowls measure approx. 9 1/8" in Diameter x 1 3/4" H.
The bowls are made of thick glass each weighing 1 lb. 6 oz.
The bowls do show wear from normal use, but for their age, they are in excellent condition. There are a few utensil marks on the bottom of each. The graphic gold leaf pattern is bright and crisp with very little wear. There are no chips nicks, cracks, crazing or flea bites. Please see pictures.
These bowls are a must have for any retro kitchen or collector of Pyrex.
