BACKSTORY:
Though vintage, this bowl appears never to have been used - it's vintage because it was acquired then transported from Japan by our parents who lived there while father was in the United States diplomatic corps serving the ongoing post-WW II rebuilding efforts of the mid-20th century.
A second voyage to Japan took place in 1980s - but it's unlikely any "stoneware shopping" took place as the trip was to bury a Japanese friend (a friendship forged during the earlier 1960s diplomatic posting and the many policy discussions across tea servings). But kept thank you notes reveal gifts were exchanged between families even given the sad circumstances - it's possible this bowl was one such gift …?
Conclusion: Probably safe with 1950-1960 as period of acquisition - but a confounding part of the bowl's "provenance" (how said in Japanese?) is the marking on the bowl's bottom about "safe dishwasher?" Thus making a 1970s acquisition perhaps more likely, maybe … ?
