Vintage (1938-1942) Vernon Kilns Don Blanding ceramic salt and pepper shakers in the Lei Lani pattern. They each measure 2 1/2" wide by 2 1/4" tall. The salt has holes that mark an "S" and the pepper a "P." Cork stoppers are in good condition (and may have been replaced at some point).
HISTORY:
By the mid 1930s artist/author Don Blanding had achieved success with the publication of numerous books of poetry and illustrations. He helped publicize Hawaii as an exotic paradise in books like Hula Moon, The Virgin of Waikiki, and his best known work, Vagabond’s House. In 1936 he was hired by California based Vernon Kilns to design Hawaiian styled patterns for a line of dinnerware. These pieces are very collectible.
Each piece in the line was signed with the pattern name and ‘Aloha, Don Blanding’ the artist’s standard greeting (he signed his books this way too).
