I have two primitive and old "barro negro" or black clay pottery bell from Oaxaca, Mexico. One bell is an angel the other is an old lady.
Barro negro is the black pottery unique to Oaxaca, which in the 1950s began to be produced mostly with a burnished sheen. That's because in the 50s, a potter named Doña Rosa devised a way to put a black metallic like sheen onto the pottery by polishing it before firing. This angel was made with a grayish black matte finish, which makes it highly likely that it was produced prior to the 1950s. the angel is hand shaped, dusty from age, with great character.
The angel measures under 5" tall by about 3-1/2" around at the bottom in one direction and 3-1/4" around in the other (so more oval than square). She has a piece of dark blue string around her waist which goes through a small hole in the clay to hold the bell. The edging along the bottom of the bell has some fleabites, and there is a divot in the interior, which I believe was there before firing. Some variation in clay "color" on surface. Other than that, she is in good vintage condition given her age.
Primitive angel, beautiful and special.
