Lovely vintage piece - Netsuke style. Mother carrying a sweet child and handing him a piece of fruit from her basket. Then again, the child is looking up - perhaps he is picking the fruit and handing to his mother to put in the basket. I love the details on this charming pair - from the decorative kimonos to the sweet shoes to the little basket.
Guessing a nicely done reproduction - I'm not an expert.
I believe the material is resin - that fits with the research I’ve found. I cannot date with surety, but perhaps mid-century or earlier.
The figure is placed on a background also of resin I believe. On the back is a brass round. This is Vibram engraved with “Millie” in cursive with a heart.
On the bottom is an Asian signature I cannot read. It is possible this figure was placed on the background at a later date, as I've found the whole figure, complete with holes for the cord, priced at 1,299 on Ebay. But if so, I will say that the resin background matches the material used in the figurine, so they are roughly of the same time period.
Japanese Netsuke figures originated in the Edo period (1600 - 1868). They were initially used as a way to attach a purse to the kimono sash. (Kimonos had no pockets - see pic). Over time they became works of art in their own right. Antique originals are renown as incredible works of art - highly expensive and collectible.
Excellent vintage condition with mild wear as would be expected for age.
