Alfred Werber founded his St. Louis-based company in 1953. According to a 1956 article by AP writer Dorothy Roe, he was the second generation of Werbers to focus on junior fashions, keeping abreast of young styles and employing junior-proportioned sizing. He also manufactured for tall and petite juniors. The company formed a partnership with the School of Fine Arts of Washington University for the purpose of cultivating design students to graduate into the St. Louis garment industry.
