Vintage 1993 Christmas Reproductions Memories Of Santa Collection Santa Ornament Circa 1840
Highlights/details:
St. Nick America Circa 1840
Inspired By a series of woodcuts created by Theodore C. Boyd. The woodcuts were used to illustrate the first print as a separate book of the classic American poem, "A Visit From St. Nicholas" by Clement C. Moore.
The natty St. Nick's clothing shows the early Dutch influence of New Amsterdam with his Dutch pipe, buckle shoes, and Knickerbockers, later known as knickers. Knickerbockers was the name given to the early Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam by Washington Irving in his famous book of 1809, Knickerbockers History of New York.
In the Boyd wood-cut reproduction below you can see he must have taken "tiny reindeer" from Moore's poem literally. Notice the woodcut has only seven reindeer instead of Clement C. Moore's famous eight. (see picture)
