Great closet Caroline! Just wondering about this piece testing positive with Simichrome. Sometimes when things are dyed black, the dye affects the outcome of the test. To me, this looks like dyed ivory. It reminds me of the Japanese netsuke figures. Just throwing that out there! β€οΈAmanda

@rmccouture Hi! I understand what you mean as it does look like a netsuke piece. The carving is made of Bakelite as Ivory has a different texture than Bakelite. There are no Schraeger lines (Cross-hatched patterning) which usually indicates if it could be elephant, hippo, etc ivory which can be seen when looked at with a loop. I hope this helps & appreciate your input! Hope you have a great New Years too!....:)

Wow Caroline! Apologies! You sure know your stuff! It's a beautiful piece, even more so because it's Bakelite and not ivory. I have a few ivory pieces that I would never wear because of their origin. They're pre-ban (antique- one is probably pre-1800, the other, pre-1900). They're beautiful but sad to me because I love animals. Anyway, kudos to you for doing your research and knowing what you're talking about! β€οΈ

@rmccouture Hi! No problem at all. I have been a collector & lover of antique pieces of jewelry, purses & clothing for over 25+ years. Over the years I have learned how to tell what things are made of like ivory, coral, Amber, precious & semi-precious gemstones, plastic, Bakelite, lucite, etc... as well as telling real from fake, natural color vs dyed & age (vintage vs contemporary).

@rmccouture As for your ivory pieces, I would wear them to show how beautiful they are & think of them as being re-cycled & that you have good taste. :) Carved & painted pieces of ivory are truly works of art... especially Asian, Native American & Eskimo (scrimshaw) pieces. So very nice meeting & sharing info with you... Best! Caroline :)

@rmccouture By the way, you have a very lovely closet! Just got a chance to take a peek!.... :)

Thanks so much Caroline! I appreciate you taking the time to look! I actually have a scrimshaw piece posted. It's a knife that was worn around the neck. For me, I think of myself as a role model in some ways. I taught for 15 years before I was in a car accident about 2 years ago, and my students looked up to me.

In spite of the fact that I'm not teaching now, I still think that if I wear something that inspires someone else to get something similar, I am advertising for whatever it is I'm wearing, even though so few people really see me these days. I wouldn't want to encourage people to wear ivory, because it inadvertently encourages poaching. Maybe I'm being too analytic about it, but I'd rather err on the side of caution!

I don't know if you have ever considered joining a vintage share group, but I'm a member of TrueVintage. It's the oldest vintage share group on Poshmark, and filled with a community of wonderful, supportive vintage poshers. It's a great way to connect with other vintage lovers, get more visibility, and share and receive knowledge about vintage. Please let me know if you're interested!

@rmccouture Hi I understand where you're coming from. How does the TrueVintage share group work? You share other people's items at certain times / days.... ? Sounds good.... :)
rmccouture
Hi Caroline. Sorry for the delay. Yes. We have shares every night of the week, and during the days/nights on the weekends. You sign up when you wish to share, and you don't when you don't. I think we average around 18 sharers per share, and share anywhere from 10-15 vintage items from each closet that signs up. I'll tag you in our welcome page!
