Vintage SUNBONNET SUE Hand Stitched Appliqué Flour Sack Patchwork Quilt
There are 16 Sunbonnet Sue blocks in a gingham border and gingham of the top edge. It has a plain white backing.
Each girl is wearing a dress made from different material designs, which look like flour sacks, and trimmed with a different colored lace. Each has a different bonnet decoration such as lace, handmade flower buttons, flowers or ribbons.
Size is about 87x82”
It looks like the quilt is a mix of hand stitching appliqué and some machine stitching. Some of the stitching is uneven, so it may be hand done or on a non-modern machine. It doesn't have any filler or stuffing that I can tell.
I'm not sure of the quilts exact age, but my guess is the 1930's-1950s. keep in mind that this is just a guess.
Overall, for a textile of this age, the quilt is in good shape and it retains its color well. Some of the material of the backing is frayed a little on the edge and it has some stitching that is a little loose in places. Some of the material on a few the dresses is frayed and gone or almost gone on a few panels. It may have some slight yellowing on the backing and edges. There are a few little spots here & there but I found them hardly noticeable.
I did not wash for fear of damage. There is a noticeable "old world family" smell and the quilt could probably use a good airing. It has been sealed in a bag in storage.
