I took these pictures six months ago. I knew it was important. I ran a photo scan, and the pieces that populated were made with real gold. I had it x-rayed for gold. It was not. I have an arsenal of jewelry books I consult. There was nothing that fit this necklace’s design. Last week, I finally found the exact piece. The seller identified it as an unsigned Alice Caviness piece. But I let research prove what I am selling. I understand researching items—that’s one of the million reasons I love doing what I do—but I find items listed online that are attributed wrongly to designers & time periods then it spreads, as people start seeing their massed-produced, common (though still beautiful) pieces attributed to designers of yore, and get excited that they have a grail piece. The second reason I didn’t stop looking was because Alice Caviness’ work is unlike it. Caviness is known for her bold art glass, Czech & Austrian crystals, & poured glass. Those are the pieces I see when hearing her name. Plus, she signed her pieces. There is an odd, textured charm attached: it looks like a hot air balloon. I’ve spent the last six months thinking this was a hallmark, find the hallmark, find the designer. Today, I rescanned the photo of the necklace, but only the closure chain and typed “Caviness”. Four pieces that had to be created the same season populated. They were all signed. And they all had the hot air balloon. For six months of investigation, I felt it was only fair to write an essay.
