Webster Clothes, Inc.
Details: Sam Feldman's father, Herman began Webster Mens Wear in 1934, and started the 'country' factory in 1936. The business was originally called Brooks Clothes; however, once Brooks Brothers expanded, they changed their name. Sam Feldman was sent to the Enoch Pratt Library's Central Branch to research other possible names for the business. "Webster" won: Herman smoked a Webster's cigar. The first store was opened in 1934 in Portsmouth, VA on $500 borrowed from Fannye Feldman. Sam Feldman became CEO of Webster's Men's Clothing from 1957-1990, and the company went public in 1986. The company also expanded into other branches including Hampstead Clothing Co., Zeidler and Zeidler on the West Coast, and Aggio, their Italian line.
