Vintage hardback book "Leaves of Grass" by Walt Whitman. This book was published in 1940 by Kingsport Press in Kingsport, TN. The Illustrations by Lewis C. Daniel are absolutely gorgeous. Green cover and edge painting. The spine and cover are in good condition. Book still has the original slipcase that it came in. The tan case does have some minor water marks at the top.
This copy of Whitman's Leaves of Grass with given to a World War II soldier while at Camp Forrest, Tennessee. The inscription is in the front cover. Camp Forrest, located in a wooded area east of the city of Tullahoma, Tennessee, was one of the U.S. Army's largest training bases during World War II. An active army post between 1941 and 1946, it was named after Civil War cavalry Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest.
The recipient, John Cartwright Bell Jr, was a native of Windsor, North Carolina. He was also a talented photographer and has black-and-white photographic prints from the 1930s depicting historic North Carolina homes and buildings in Bertie, Camden, and Chowan counties archived at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
This book is beautiful and historical in more ways than one. Would make a lovely addition for any book collector or WWII collector alike.
